Calif. Ballot Measure Failure Might Signal Wage-Hike Fatigue

The outcome, which The Associated Press called Tuesday, marked the first failure of a statewide ballot measure to raise the minimum wage in almost 30 years, after voters in Montana and Missouri rejected such measures in 1996. California’s Proposition 32 would have increased the state hourly wage floor for larger employers to $17 immediately and $18 in January 2025, and raised the minimum for smaller employers to $17 in January 2025 and $18 a year later. The current hourly floor is $16.
